Teahouses
Teahouses
are a common sight seen everywhere in this mountain city, serving as the
primary meeting place for leisure and social contacts among local people
and travelers. Teahouses in Chongqing are not only considered the place
for thirsty people to visit but for people to chat in a kind of community
exchange forum. Some of the older teahouse function as a club, yet without
the membership restriction. As the people of Chongqing become more prosperous
with more leisure time to linger in these establishments, some of the
old-styled teahouses are being replaced with cafes. Some of them even
offer private rooms in Japanese, European and countryside style for customers
that prefer more intimate surroundings.

 Sichuan
Opera
The
elderly in Chongqing
are fond of watching Sichuan opera. This genre of Chinese opera is noted
for its pitched tune accompanied only by percussion and chorus
without any wind or string instruments. Most of the programs in the wide
repertoire of the Sichuan opera are adapted from the Chinese classical
novel, mythology, legend and folk tale. Besides, the performance is always
full of wit, humor, lively dialogue
and distinct local flavor. The Sichuan opera has also built a system
of stylized movements with acting that is both exquisite and vivid. In
order to portray special characters, there are a series of stunts that
are included in the " face-changing." In Chinese opera, facial
makeup is usually painted in advance but in Sichuan opera, the performer
can change their expression suddenly on the stage during the performance.
Therefore, it makes the audience exclaim with admiration during the transition.

Dragon
Dance
Tongliang County is the home to the dragon lantern
dance. It originated during the Sui and the Tang Dynasties, flourished
during the Ming and the Qing Dynasties yet it still remains quite popular
nowadays. Hence there is a popular expression handed down for generations
in Chongqing: " The Lantern in Hechuan, Fish in Dazu, while Dragon
Dance in Tongliang". With the help of some large props and accompanied
by an ensemble of Chinese wind and percussion instruments, the performance
of the dragon lantern dance is usually carried out with firecrackers set
off in order to create an atmosphere of jubilation and celebration.
