Chongqing's port reflects the city's importance
as a major industrial and transport center along both the Yangtze River
and Jialing River. Although it is considerably less busy than 60 years
ago, Chaotianmen is nonetheless an interesting place to see a typically
busy dock as vessels moored mid-river are loaded and unloaded. This is
the pier for tourists to board a cruise ship of the great Three Gorges
tour downstream or the terminus for upstream tourists that have departed
from Wuhan, Nanjing or Shanghai.
Jinyunshan
Mountain
Jinyunshan
is a mountain retreat just outside of Chongqing where people like
to escape the summer heat of the city. It is about sixty kilometers
northwest of the urban area with an altitude of 900meters. It is a
densely forested ridge of some 1,300 hectares, harboring as many as
1,700 subtropical plants, including ginkgo (a living fossil), metasequoia
and other exotic plants. There are nine peaks dotted with ancient
architectural structures and relics, the Jinyunshan Mountain is an
ideal place for monastery enthusiasts and for those that wish to enjoy
the natural beauty. Locals refer to it as the "Lesser Emeishan"
and Jinyunshan is a favorite summer retreat for people living in the
Chongqing downtown area.
