The North Hot Spring Park
At
the foot of Jinyunshan Mountain, 50km away from the downtown area, lies
the North Hot Spring Park. The park is extensive covering 10 acres in
area with caves, springs, rock artworks, dense forests and temples to
make it a wonderful retreat for exploring. Sightseeing spots include the
Hot Spring Temple, the Carving Garden and the Hot Spring Pool. In the
Carving Garden are the 18 Luohan cliff carvings of the Song dynasty and
a 2-meter-high dragon pagoda that was carved out of a single block of
stone during the Ming dynasty. These relics are valuable to the unique
history of the area.
Wansheng Stone Forest
Located 165km from downtown Chongqing, Wansheng Stone
Forest (wansheng shilin) is the oldest (formed during the Ordovician epoch)
and the second largest stone forest (the largest one is in Guilin) in China.
The
forest here has a typical karst appearance, filled with sword, drum, pagoda,
mushroom and bud shaped stones, as well as animal shapes. This area is
sometimes referred to as a stone made zoo.
How to get there: You can take a tourist express
train or, as an alternative, take bus No.327 from Nanping Bus Station
and alight at Wansheng, where you have to take another minibus directly
to the forest. The journey takes about 4 hours in each direction.
