Gulangyu Island - across the Lu River to
the southwest of Xiamen is the Gulangyu Scenic area. The western-style
building and plentiful greenery on Gulangyu distinguishes it from the
rest of Xiamen. It is a pedistrian area with cars and bicycles prohibited
to contribute to the serenity of Gulangyu. Major tourist attractions
on the island include Sunshine Rock; a statue and other relics commemorating
the hero Zheng Cheng Gong, a Ming Dynasty general who waged war against
the invader, the King of the Ching Dynasty. Gulangyu is conveniently
linked with Xiamen by three ferry routes.
Jimei Town - is the birthplace of Mr.
Tan Kah Kee, leader of patriotic overseas Chinese groups. It evolved
from the original school he first founded in 1913 and now consists of
numerous disciplines. The scenic spots in Jimei include Ao Park, Dragon
Boat pool, Yan Ping Fort, Home returning Hall, and Mr. Tan Kah Kee's
Residence and Museum.
