Yinchuan, the capital of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, is a city with an extensive history. It is on the fertile Ningxia Plain, with the Huanghe (Yellow) River to the east and Mount Holan to the west. number of institutes of higher learning though not a single university existed a few years ago. The resumption of religious freedom allows the Hui people to practise their religion in one of the mosques in the city and prepare their tradional foods. Yinchuan also boasts many scenic places of historical interest. These include the Chengtian Monastery Pagoda and the Western Xia Mausoleum. Some special products of Yinchuan such as rugs and blankets, inkslabs from Mount Holan and Chinese wolfberries are popular at home and abroad.

The Nanguan Mosque - was built in 1915 k. and rebuilt in 1981. The Mosque is two stories high at 22 meters with a decorative fountain in front and a capacity for one thousand worshipers. There is a magnificent roof of five green imposing domes. They represent the symbol of Islamic figures: the largest one in the center symbolizes the Islamic prophet Mohammed; the other four domes symbolize the great figures of Islam, i.e. Hanaifey, Malik, Shafeyi and Hanboli.
