Dalian was originally a small fishing village called Qingniwathat later came to be known as a city of foreign adventurers. It has undergone many changes in the last hundred years but the former fishing village has become a prosperous port city, appearing as a striking mirage on the vast sea in northern China.

Its name was changed from Qingniwa to Daluni and then to Dalian, as it is now known. This evolution marked the changes of the harbor city from Tsarist Russia that had intended to turn Dalian into a fashionable city like Paris and later, Japanese invaders wanted to transform it into another metropolis like Tokyo. However, history thwarted their ambitions, and Dalian stood on its own reputation. Dalian is now one of the most important seaports as well as an industrial, trading and touristcity in China. Dalian has a pleasant climate with the clearly demarcated seasons, cool summers, and warm winters making it abundant with natural resources.

Asan important source for the production of fruit and water products in China, Dalian is also the athletic center for "home of track and field" and the famous "soccer city". Governing six districts : Zhongshan, Xigang, Shahekou, Ganjingzi, Jinzhou and Lushunkou, three cities: Wafangdian, Pulandian, and Zhuanghe, and one county Changhai, Dalian covers an area of 12,500 square kilometers with 5,370,000 inhabitants. The flourishing coastal city of Dalian is the major port for China's northeast province and is a magnet for many foreign investors.
