Wenchang Chicken, Jiaji Duck, Hele Crab, Dongshan Mutton are
four representative dishes while seafood is another local delicacy
in Hainan. There are numerous restaurants or hotels that serve wonderful
seafood dishes throughout the island, especially Sanya and Haikou.
The large variety of different food caters to all appetites. Native
delicacies include snake or crocodile in front of you which can be
tried with the help of chopsticks. In the last decade this island
has attracted many investors from the Chinese Mainland which has resulted
in a proliferation of mainland cuisine, such as Beijing Duck, Sichuan
Hot Spot or stewed pork from Hunan.
Tropical fruits are not only served as after-meal
desserts but to be combined together with other food textures as a
melee of flavor. Hainan has been nicknamed Coconut Island representing
the rich harvesting of coconut, as well as other major locally produced
fruits; are mango, pineapple, banana, papaya, lichi, guava, rambutan
and passion fruit. |
In Sanya, the local cooking style for fish is to
steam it with soy sauce, ginger and scallions which is regarded as
the best way to taste the natural delicious flavor. There are a few
restaurants along Xin Jian Jie, the small street near Sanya Aquatic
Market, where the cooks serve the best seafood for their customers.
There are many Dai pai dong (simple restaurants where your table is
just beside the street) both in Haikou and Sanya. The surroundings
of a Dai pai dong may not be appealing or comfortable but the chefs
are rather professional preparing amazing foods in front of diners.
