The Macau Special Administrative Region has an area of 23.8 sq km which
includes the Macau Peninsula (with 7.8n sq km connected
to Continental China by an isthmus), the islands of Taipa(6.2sq
km)and Coloane(7.6sq km)and the reclaimed
area COTAI(2.2sq km) Two bridges connect
Macau to Taipa Island (one of them is 2.6 sq km
long and the other is 4.38 km long). The longest one directly serves
the Macau International Airport located in the Island of Taipa. Both islands
are connected by an isthmus which is 22.1 km long.
Besides the"Portas do Cerco"-the northern border of the Macau
peninsula is a gateway to access China through the "COTAI" Frontier
Post. Immigration and customs is located in the reclaimed area between
the islands of Taipa and Coloane.
Macau may be a small community of tiny dimensions but it possesses the
highest population rate in the world and the per capita income is one
of the highest in Asia. There is a cosmopolitan atmosphere, tolerant in
practices and living experiences, where, as always, Asia meets Europe
and where the Mediterranean cultures live side by side with the Chinese.
