Dai Nationality--Mascot
The Dai group has largest population in the prefecture, numbering over 280,000. Their villages are invariably found near rivers or streams, so the Dai people have earned the nickname "people of the water." The Dai believe peacocks can bring good fortune to their lives. They always celebrate New Year and other auspicious events with peacock dances.

Hani Nationality
The Hani dwell in the mountainous parts of Xishuangbanna and call themself the Aini. They possess a rich oral literature and a tradition of maintaining the family lineage by having a son's name begin with the last one or two words of his father's name. The major festival of the Hani people is the Gatangpa festival, at which people worship their ancestors and celebrate family reunions. This is an especially happy occasion for young people. Dressed in their best clothes, they sing, dance or climb mountains to gather flowers.
